Description

The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL from the W 113 series offered here, affectionately known as the "Pagoda" due to its concave hardtop roof reminiscent of the curved roofs of Asian temples, is a particularly sought-after model from its initial production year of 1964. As one of the early examples of this iconic series, it elegantly embodies the synthesis of sporty performance and luxurious comfort of the early 1960s.

Its naturally aspirated straight-six engine with a 2.3-litre capacity produced a notable 150 bhp (110 kW) and gave the car quite sporty performance for its time. Power was transmitted via a four-speed automatic gearbox. The 230 SL featured advanced independent suspension and front disc brakes, which contributed to a very safe and comfortable driving experience for the era.

The full restoration mentioned here in 2015, which was awarded the top mark of 1, indicates an exceptionally high-quality and detailed refurbishment of the vehicle. Such a mark is typically only given to vehicles that are in a condition equivalent to or even surpassing their original factory condition. The mere 4,700 km driven since then demonstrate that this prized possession has been barely used since its restoration.

The brown-bronze metallic paintwork is an elegant and typical colour scheme for the period, which beautifully accentuates the Pagoda's smooth lines. Combined with the beige full leather interior, it creates a timelessly stylish ambience.

The fact that this 230 SL features both a soft top and the characteristic hardtop increases its value.

The production run of the 230 SL was relatively short, lasting just under three and a half years and concluding on 5th January 1967 after 18,831 units were built. This comparatively low production number, coupled with its elegant design, robust engineering, and historical significance, makes the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL "Pagoda" a highly desirable classic today and a valuable investment for enthusiasts and collectors.
