Description

At the 1984 Motor Show in Paris, the Testarossa returned as the descendant of the 512 BBi. Pininfarina's design broke with tradition and was as stunning as it was innovative. The side air intakes were larger than on the previous model. This led to the introduction of the gill slats that would soon become the Testarossa's trademark.

The Testarossa's 12-cylinder boxer engine was equipped with four valves per cylinder: at the time of the car's launch, it was the most powerful engine ever mounted in a production sports car.

The name Testarossa was a historic nod to the successful 500 and the 250 Testa Rossa sports racing cars of the late 1950s. "Testa Rossa" means "red head" and was a reference to the colour of the camshaft covers of the sports racing cars. The modern descendant of these models also had the camshaft covers painted in the same colour.

The car was intended to replace the Boxer model series and to be radically different in design to its predecessor. It still had a flat 12-cylinder mid-engine. However, the wedge-shaped profile had disappeared, the shapes became more rounded, the front wings merged into one of the most famous design features in the world: the lowering and elongated ribs on the sides, which finally ended in the wide rear wings. The round rear lights, which had been a design feature of Ferrari cars for over a decade, were abandoned with the Testarossa.
